There are two ways you can play Multiplayer in DE: New Ranked Matchmaking, where you select the maps you'd like to play on (from a pool) and you enter a queue to be matched with a player around the same ELO as you. Then you pick your Civ and enter the game. Yeah the Campaign story scenarios really help you learn the basics of the game but AOE II has a really advanced and high barrier of entry multiplayer.
